How does my appraisal link to wellbeing?

Your appraisal should quite simply be all about YOU!

The prep work leading up to appraisal season by a line manager should aligned everyone in the team’s priorities, so when you actually sit down to talk, there are no surprises of what is expected of you. This means the dedicated 1:1 time should be taken to look at how you can be best supported to achieve these objectives and how you could develop more into your role.

The line manager should have already completed the documents and clearly taken the time out to think about you and your next steps (this is part of a manager’s responsibility in any business). You should then be given the opportunity to bring your own ideas, add or amend any targets as you talk through them and feel empowered to build yourself whilst meeting the needs of the organisation. You should feel like real time has been spent investing in you as a person so you could be the best possible worker and feel happy and confident in your position.

As someone who has been treated this way during the appraisal season I can say that I felt valued and was given every opportunity to be open and honest, have shared decision making which has empowered me to be great at my job. My manager really understood the type of work I liked to do and the type of work I didn’t particularly enjoy. This again kept me motivated and made me feel like I wanted to stay in the role gaining great job satisfaction.

As you should know by now, professional wellbeing or your personally development is part of the 5 pillars of wellbeing, so crucial to staying happy and healthy in the workplace.
